Wood-carved bears are famous as one of Hokkaido souvenirs for their traditional Ainu crafts.

Yakumo-cho, Hokkaido

Yakumo-cho is a town that was pioneered after the Meiji Restoration.

  As a source of income in winter when farming can’t be done, farmers

  in Yakumo and nearby Ainu people began to make wood-carved bear

  to improve their lives.

 

Asahikawa, Hokkaido

It started when Umetarou Matsui, an Ainu tribe, made a wood-carved

  bear in Asahikawa City.

 

<The reason why it became famous>

In 1960, various tourist attractions such as Hitsujigaoka Observation Deck and Noboribetsu Bear Ranch were opened to revive the local industry.

In the decades from 1960, the number of tourists visiting Hokkaido has increased by about 3.6 times.

 

 

<The meaning of a wood-carved bear>

It is said to be an auspicious thing with the meaning of “growing up big” or “becoming a big shot”.

Some people use it as a lucky decorations, amulet for entrance exams.

Noboribetsu Bear Park

The park has a lot of events.

For example, athletic by bears, foot race by ducks, arm wrestling by bears.

 One is Rena, one is Aren, one is Nonnno, the last one is Ikoro.

In 2021 the amount of bear damage in Hokkaidou was the highest level since records began compared to 2000 the amount of bear incidents has increased by six times.
