The Salmon Science Museum

Hello, everyone.

Do you like salmon? I like it because it is so tasty and healthy! This fish has a deep relationship with Hokkaido.

Today, I will introduce the Salmon Science Museum.

This building is located in Makomanai Park in Sapporo.

The Salmon Science Museum was built in 1984 because of the successful release of salmon fry into the Toyohira River.

Each year, after that, they have helped salmon fry hatch and be released.

Salmon and other aquatic creatures from Sapporo are kept and exhibited there.

In the basement room, you can observe salmon from the side, like in an aquarium. The species and size of the exhibits change with the seasons.

You can see salmon fry from winter to spring and mature salmon in the fall.

Students from local elementary schools and kindergartens frequently go there for tours.

It is also popular with overseas visitors, with many foreign tourists from Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The History of Releasing Salmon Fry

The first salmon fry was first released in Japan in Ibaraki in 1876.

Then, in 1877, Hokkaido also began releasing salmon fry.

From then, the scale of the release gradually expanded, and the record catch was in 1996.

However, salmon catches have been gradually declining in recent years. Nevertheless, domestic demand for salmon is increasing.

To solve this problem, Japanese scientists are conducting research.

In the near future, salmon may become more expensive, so I recommend you eat a lot of it while you can!

Sapporo Salmon Festa

The Sapporo Salmon Festa is held at the Salmon Science Museum every year!

They are holding it to celebrate the return of the salmon to Sapporo! At this festival, you can enjoy a quiz about sea creatures, and if you answer the quiz correctly, you can get superb prizes.

You can also enjoy fresh vegetables and other stalls.

If you are interested in salmon or like salmon, you should visit the Salmon Science Museum.

You will surely learn more about the charm of salmon!

Thats all for todays topic.

Thank you for your reading!
